Q&A
Sarah: Today, we have the privilege of sitting down with Jeremy Graef, one of the co-founders of Studio Connate, a renowned interior design studio known for its luxurious, thoughtful spaces. Jeremy, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Let’s dive in!
Sarah: Studio Connate is known for its modern yet timeless designs. How would you describe your design philosophy?
Jeremy: Thank you! Our philosophy is rooted in the idea that good design transcends trends. We aim to create spaces that feel authentic, timeless, and deeply connected to the people who inhabit them. We take cues from the environment, the architecture, and the emotions we want to evoke, and we strive to blend aesthetics with functionality in a way that resonates over time. Every project, whether it's residential or commercial, is treated with the utmost care and attention to detail.
Sarah: You’ve worked on projects all over the world, from luxury homes to private villas. Is there a particular project that stands out to you?
Jeremy: Each project holds its own unique place in my heart, but if I had to pick one, our project in Abu Dhabi really stands out. It was an extraordinary challenge, given its scale and the context of blending contemporary architecture with the traditional desert landscape. We worked closely with the client to incorporate elements of warmth and comfort, balancing the opulence of the architecture with more serene, personal spaces. It was a wonderful exercise in translating a client's vision into a truly bespoke home.

Sarah: That sounds incredible. You’ve mentioned the importance of balancing opulence with comfort in your projects. How do you find that balance when designing luxurious spaces?
Jeremy: To me, luxury isn't about excess or ostentation; it's about creating a feeling of ease and tranquility within a space, where comfort is paramount, but with an elevated sense of design. We achieve this by focusing on natural materials like wood, stone, and luxurious textiles that feel good to the touch and create a sense of intimacy. By keeping lines clean and spaces open, the sense of opulence doesn’t overwhelm—it enhances. It’s about crafting spaces where you can feel both relaxed and inspired.
Sarah: Your projects often feature a harmonious blend of textures and materials. How do you decide which materials to use in a given space?
Jeremy: The materials we choose are deeply influenced by the space itself—its location, light, and context. For example, in a coastal home, natural oak and stone might be ideal for capturing the light and creating warmth, while in a desert villa, we might lean toward limestone and custom woodwork that complements the environment. We also take into account the client’s lifestyle and preferences. It’s a mix of instinct and practicality, and we always strive for materials that feel timeless yet contemporary.

Sarah: Speaking of clients, what is your approach to understanding and translating a client’s vision into a space?
Jeremy: The most important part of any project is listening. We begin every project by understanding the client’s lifestyle, aspirations, and how they interact with their space. It’s a collaborative process—we ask a lot of questions and pay close attention to the answers. From there, we distill those insights into a design concept that is both personal and aspirational. The goal is to craft a space that reflects who they are, while also inspiring them every day.
Sarah: Studio Connate seems to be at the forefront of integrating technology into interior design. How do you see technology shaping the future of the industry?
Jeremy: Technology is definitely reshaping the way we design, but I think it’s important that it enhances the human experience rather than detracts from it. Smart home technology, for example, allows us to create environments that are not only functional but also sustainable and adaptable to the client’s needs. In terms of design, we’re incorporating more sustainable materials and solutions—like energy-efficient lighting and automated systems—that not only improve the overall experience but also make the spaces more responsible in terms of their environmental impact. The future is definitely about marrying technology with comfort, ensuring that both form and function coexist seamlessly.
Sarah: With the design world constantly evolving, what trends do you see gaining momentum in the next few years?
Jeremy: One trend I see gaining more prominence is the focus on biophilic design—bringing nature indoors. There’s a growing desire for spaces that not only look beautiful but also promote well-being. Natural materials, abundant plant life, and layouts that maximize natural light are all part of this trend. Another thing I’m excited about is the return to more personalized, custom design. People are moving away from mass-produced items and are looking for more bespoke pieces that reflect their individuality and values. It’s a very exciting time to be in this industry, with so much focus on creating environments that promote both functionality and wellness.
Sarah: That’s definitely an exciting vision for the future. Lastly, what advice would you give to someone looking to design their own space, whether it's a small apartment or a grand home?
Jeremy: My biggest piece of advice would be to focus on creating a space that resonates with you personally. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and create a space that tells your story. Invest in quality pieces that will last, and don’t feel pressured to follow trends just because they’re popular at the moment. A thoughtfully curated space will always feel timeless and unique. And finally, remember that great design is not just about how a room looks but also how it makes you feel.
Sarah: Jeremy, thank you so much for your insights today. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you, and we look forward to seeing more of Studio Connate’s incredible work in the future.
Jeremy: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure chatting with you as well.
